This course is for people with an interest in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education who want a comprehensive foundation in the theory and practice of good assessment. No prior knowledge or experience is required.

This course will set out fundamental assessment theories and provide hands-on experience of the basic methodologies of constructing a programme of assessment, written item and OSCE station writing and workplace-based assessment tools. Participants will be introduced to basic psychometrics to enable understanding of the utility of tests and to the principles of standard setting.

The course will include interactive lectures and workshops. Participants will have the opportunity to explore their understanding of the basic principles of assessments in relation to their needs, and gain skills in specific assessment methods. Reading lists and further references will be provided.

Aims and Objectives

This course will provide fundamental coverage of assessment principles and methodologies in medical education. Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of assessment based on evidence from the literature
  • Gain hands-on experience of planning a programme of assessment, blueprinting, item and OSCE writing, using workplace-based assessment tools
  • Gain an understanding of the principles of standard setting and basic psychometrics
