Designing Systems of Assessment for Healthcare Educators

12 May - 23 May 2025

The course will be delivered virtually over 2 weeks, with asynchronous and real-time discussions.

Regulatory bodies are increasingly looking for evidence that health professions education programmes are implementing coherent systems of assessment for entire programmes, with clear Assessment Strategies.

For leaders and directors of medical and health professions education programmes, it is important to understand how their assessments for the programme as a whole meet criteria for good systems of assessment, including the perspectives of various stakeholders. The framework outlined in the 2018 Consensus Framework for Good Assessment (Medical Teacher, 2018) provides guidance to educators but it leaves the challenge of applying this in practice, in a particular local / national context.

The aim of this course is to providehealthcare educators who are looking to implement or review assessment in their institution, and especially for theoretical underpinnings for designing a comprehensive system of assessment.

The objectives are for the participants to

  1. Gain an overview of contemporary developments in medical education and their implications for assessment
  2. Explore in detail the Consensus Framework for Good Assessment  (Norcini, J. et al. 2018 Medical Teacher, 40(11);1102-1109)
  3. Learn to apply assessment system analyses
  4. Learn to create an Assessment Strategy
  5. Gain experience in designing a system of assessment
  6. Become familiar with strategies to address criteria for good assessment

The activities in each week/module:

  1. Pre-recorded voice over presentation(s)
  2. Discussion Board: participants to post questions, outcomes of tasks, comment on other posts. Tutors will engage in discussions asynchronously
  3. Live webinar sessions, so participants can ask questions of the tutors in real time
  4. Tasks relating to the application of the module content, which can be attempted in groups, or individually. Tutors will feedback via the Discussion Board
  5. A repository of key literature relating to the topic(s) of the module
